He was friend and pastor to Catholic and Protestant and Jew and agnostic. He loved people from the steps of this church to famine relief camps in Ethiopia. He reminded me all the time that Paulist ministry is especially for those outside the Church, but paradoxically many of those who remember him most fondly are the parishioners of St. Paul the Apostle parish.

4. Know Your Audience
This is one that I learned through the back door. In going into a pitch meeting, Bud figured his idea was so good that it didn't matter what the current programming philosophy of a buyer was.

5. Appeal To the Noble
He taught me to appeal to the noble. Not to condemn the drek on television, but to hold up what is good and recognize its power to ennoble the human character. Light A Candle If you want to change the quality of the media so it better reflects the best of human values; like love, freedom, human dignity then it is much better to praise what is good, then to condemn what is bad.

6. Take Care of Yourself
He taught me the value of taking care of yourself. He would go for his swim, he would take a nap, he would have a fine meal with a good friend.
