7. Don't Give Up
Bud referred to himself as a stubborn German, others said he was uniquely aggressive or didn't know how to take no for an answer. What he taught me was the value of being single-minded. In fact, that is what I think of when I hear the teaching of Jesus, blessed are the pure of heart.

8. Be Positive
In the hospital, Bud told each nurse the he or she was the best, that he or she was taking great care of him. I learned the value of affirming people from Bud. He was successful because his optimism bordered on being delusional. My lesson is to be optimistic. After all, we believe in a God of hope, in a religion based on resurrection.

9. Never Stop Learning
Not only did Bud leave behind a tremendous legacy in Paulist Productions and the Humanitas Prize, he also left behind a huge library. Bud was a voracious reader. He credited it to his seminary summers at Lake George N.Y. where they weren't allowed to do much else but read.

10. Remember The Poor
Jesus, in his inaugural address that we heard in the gospel, came to bring Good News to the Poor. Bud never forgot his responsibility to the poor. He not only went to the soup kitchen to help, but he made a movie about Dorothy Day, the American un-canonized patron saint of justice for the poor.
