As the year 1000 neared, Russia was scarcely more than vast wilderness
with a few settlements. Yet when the Prince of Kiev embraced Eastern
Christianity, he tied the fates of both the Orthodox faith and Russia
together in a way that continues to this very day.
The builders of the nation were also keepers of the faith. In the
thousand years of its history, the nation and its people would suffer
terribly. Their land was harsh, cold and deeply vulnerable, affording
no protection from the Asians to the south or the Europeans from
the West. Not surprisingly the Jesus Russians worship is the image
of a suffering servant. One who endured great hardship without complaint.
As a result, Easter is the core of the Russian faith--a time of
rebirth, renewal and hope. This is the very heart and soul of a
people whose experience is defined by suffering and bloodshed from
the very beginning.
