When the Spanish and Portuguese came to Latin America, it was the
start of a new age. Indigenous societies were annihilated. Cultures
were crushed. The last thing that could be expected was that the
native people would adopt the faith of the conquerors who had brought
nothing but misery.
Yet, that is exactly what happened. With surprising swiftness,
the people of Latin America became overwhelmingly Christian. However,
their faith, worship and devotion were definitively Latin American.
Today, Latin Americans have created one of the most dynamic centers
of Christianity in the world. This is the chronicle of their vibrant
experience of Jesus.

To the Europeans who settled in the New World, North America appeared
to be a vast wilderness-a Promised Land - just waiting for them
to put their stamp of God upon it. They came with few supplies,
a handful of compatriots and an enormous dream for an ideal community
in Jesus. That nation is a direct reflection of Protestant culture
- a social experiment that continues to this very day. It continued
to be a "Promised Land", absorbing a huge influx of Catholic believers
in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Yet in North America, two groups did not share in the prosperity
or piety of the European settlers. The first were the Native Americans,
for whom the "Promised Land" was originally their home. The second
group was the African slaves. Both would build their faith on an
image of a Jesus in exile.
