In the wake of the death of George Floyd in May 2020, the nation has entered into a deeper conversation on issues of civil rights. But in the wake of that conversation, controversies surrounding the legacy of Saint Junipero Serra have also risen to the surface and with it, concerns about historical preservation and religious freedom.
To this end, we at Paulist Productions are beginning an endeavor to more fully explore the legacy of Junipero Serra along with a renewed historical appreciation of native peoples, a documentary project entitled Junipero Serra: Statue of Limitations. We will be speaking with top scholars representing many different perspectives so that we can gain a fuller understanding of the major issues that lie beneath the usual talking points regarding Father Serra’s legacy.
